I just read an interesting article about a BP PR parody on Twitter that has quickly amassed double the following of BP’s actual Twitter account. It seems the Twitter feed in question is actually a fraud – sending out irreverent and inaccurate feeds about the disaster in the Gulf.
And BP’s reaction to the false Tweeter is a curious (and in my point-of-view, accurate) one. It’s doing nothing.
A wise move. For a company with as many problems on its plate as BP, responding maliciously to this type of low-brow fraud would give the correct impression that the company should be worried about bigger things. Instead, it’s taking the stance that “people are rightly upset about the company” and letting this one flow like water under the bridge.
Good move. And one other companies should follow. Sometimes it’s best to let things go. The company will have plenty of image repair to deal with after this crisis has been averted. There’s a time and place for everything.
