No, that wasn’t a typo. In a move that signals (yet again) the importance of mobile advertising and e-commerce applications, Groupon – just two years old – will sell for billions. For those of you not in the know, the site is essentially a group coupon site that offers huge discounts on products and services that change daily based on the number of people who take advantage. It’s like a big box, Wal-Mart discount strategy, only people take advantage of these volume discounts right on their mobile phones. While the deals don’t mean much in immediate products for the restaurants, service companies and other businesses offering huge savings (if only for a day), they offer exposure that many companies lump into their marketing budgets.
