In the wake of the Anthony Weiner scandal, it’s hard to argue with the old adage, “Honesty is the Best Policy.” Lies beget lies; it’s as much a truism for a child learning wrong from right as it is for a high profile politician or a corporate board of directors.
When things go bad, the first reaction is avoidance, but if there is one thing that is revealed time and time again in the 21st century, it is that if there’s information that CAN get out, it WILL get out. And when it gets out, it will get out in a big way.
So take a lesson from Mr. Weiner – who lied and lied only to finally come full circle and come clean – and keep to the truth. It may be uncomfortable for your personal or business profile in the short-term, but the truth will always set you free. Transparency and open, fact-based communication is lesson one in any crisis.
Always make honesty your go-to policy.
