Media Relations from the White House on the Death of Bin Laden – Solid A

As the word spread that Osama Bin Laden had been killed by an elite group of US military professionals, it was easy to see the media would have a dynamite story on their hands. Within hours news of the operation was plastered across the media landscape – and journalists wanted answers.

As stories go, this is one of the biggest of the past decade. And as interviews by government spokespeople began to circulate, it became clear the administration was impeccably prepared for the media firestorm that was coming.

I give the White House a solid A for it’s handling of the story.

By and large, officials stuck to the facts, giving an open and honest portrayal of how the events unfolded. Pictures of Obama and company in the war room were leaked, with leadership watching the raid in real time. When facts of the operation were in dispute, they were quickly corrected – so even while facts did change, they were changed quickly and definitively, preserving the bond of trust between White House staff and journalists (and, in turn, the American people).

And, maybe most importantly, the pictures of Bin Laden’s body will not be made available to the public – giving the world the message that we intend to move on and not dwell on this action or give Bin Laden supporters propaganda they could use for years to come to fan the flames of US hate.

This event was handled in the media to near perfection. My hats off to those in charge for a job well done.
