When talking with clients and prospects about social media, I’m quick to point out that social media – Facebook, Twitter and everything in between – is the new word of mouth. Except that unlike the phenomenon where a rumor could sweep through a small town in a matter of days or weeks, on the Internet, a rumor can reach a worldwide audience in minutes.
Here is an interesting article about how automakers have addressed the 21st century communications challenges posed by social media. While in years past they may have waited weeks or even months after noticing a vehicle problem before issuing a recall, they now jump on problems quickly and decisively, before the public can spread the news for them.
Communications rule #1 – speak for yourself, don’t let others speak for you.
For automakers, it’s important to get ahead of any auto defect issues. This lesson is true for any company. Your reputation is a direct reflection of your brand.
Shape your reputation. Don’t let it shape you.
